Last weekend I went to Johannesburg for the first time in my life. Being born and raised in Cape Town, I had no Idea what to expect, but I’ve heard some stories. I heard it was very dry and flat and just buildings everywhere..
Two of my friends and I went to visit a University friend who lives there.. Truth be told I wasn’t sure where exactly she lived because I was clueless.. Untill recently I thought Pretoria and Johannesburg was the same place – sorry guys… But I quickly learned it’s not and my friend lives near Krugers Dorp, close to Lanseria Airport. So that’s where we flew to.. Firstly I’ve only ever travelled international, so being able to have almost anything with me on the plane and also no passport was totally weird to me.. Lanseria is also a super small airport so this was a totally new experience to me..
We were welcomed with open arms and in total excitement by our friend aka Joburg expert and Tour guide for the weekend 😉 The first Night we spent at home drinking Red wine catching up with some girl chat and enjoying the most delicious Tapas..
We had an itinerary for the weekend to make sure we do as much as possible whilst in Johannesburg. Saturday we went to Montecasino for the Consol Craft beer festival, we spent the entire day there, drinking beer and chilling in the sun, it was basically summer in Johannesburg – totally weird as it was freezing in Cape Town!! All in all the Beerfest was very fun, but also very different from the festivals in Cape Town. Normally we’re use to festivals closing and we would still chill there, finish our drinks and take our time before leaving, but not here, the security came to us twice to ask us to hurry up and leave as the festival was over.. Very strange, I think Cape Town people are very laid back as the same thing happened to us the night at another place..
After the beer festival we went home to change for the evening. We went to Illovo to experience the Nightlife in Joburg. Our friend took us to Hogshead for drinks. Tequila happened and we went out dancing.. till very late…..nuff said.
Sunday morning we went to Market on Main in Maboneng. We had super yummy food and smoothies there and explored the Market. I really enjoyed the market and also it was quite different as some stalls were inside and others on the sidewalk outside, I thought the street market was quite cool and different!! Also the food at the market was so amazing, like there was a lot to choose from and I could make up my mind as everything looked good!!
I was super happy and excited when we found a “Before I Die” wall just across the street from the Market. I’ve seen pictures of the all over the world and finally had the opportunity to write on one. We took like a million pictures at the wall!!
We decided to do a Chilled Sunday Night, as Saturday was very busy and tiring, so we went for dinner at The Wolfpack Restaurant in Parkhurst. I had the Chicken and Brie burger with a side of sweet potato chips served with hummus. The chicken burger was topped with rocket, brie and pancetta, with a strawberry and ginger jam. It was really big and very very good. The only thing is I hoped that the strawberry and ginger jam would have a stronger taste, I could barely taste it.. but other than that it was super good and the sweet potato chips were AMAZING, who would have thought it would go so well with hummus!! Everyone was super happy with their food and Cocktails, like seriously their burgers are amazing, if you’re ever in Joburg go and eat there!!
After dinner we just got some movie snacks and chilled at home watching movies, I think all of us were so tired after all the weekend excitement we needed a break… Monday morning came and it was time to pack and say goodbye… but not before ending off the weekend with a classic Spur Brekkie.. and of course some “drama” of running around after a certain missing cellphone lol..
So my final thoughts on Johannesburg.. I really had an amazing and fun weekend. Experienced loads of new stuff and realised Joburg is actually a nice place. I think it would take a while to get used to living there and also my nose would not agree with that dry weather.. that was quite crazy how dry it was and also the fact that it was summer in winter the entire weekend – that was quite cool!! For now Cape Town still has my heart, but don’t get me wrong I’ll definitely visit again.. I still have so much to see and do there..
Ps. A big thank you Leona for hosting us the weekend and also Mieke and Corlia for an entertaining & fun weekend..Next time we’ll hit Sun City, Gold Reef City,The Cradle of Humankind and of course Pretoria!!
